I consider myself a novice, but only put in money twice. The first time when founding an online poker account (more about this later) at a poker room with the minimum deposit. This has happened sometimes in February 2008.
Then the second time it happened on a live tournament with friends of a friend of mine (Csabi Csohány) back in September 2008. The later turned out to be a good investment since I won 
. Then I have used a part of this prize to fund one more online poker account at the now defunct pokerroom.com. In a few weeks playing with real mony I have lost the whole bankroll invested here.
Then I have read the first piece of strategy education on sit and go tournaments, also called as single table tournaments. (The later term can be confusing since they can be more than a single table tournaments.)
